Neighborhood Food Drive Sunday, January 10!

Neighb Food DriveHomes in participating neighborhoods will receive grocery bags by Friday, January 8 with invitations to fill them and leave them out for pick up by volunteers on Sunday, January 10.

Started by Kathy Busch in her own Guilderland neighborhood in 2008, the collection now includes thousands of households throughout the Capital District. Last year Kathy and her Hunger Champions collected more than 30,000 pounds of food. Can they beat that total this year? We sure hope so!

If you would like to participate, bring your non-perishable food donation to the Food Bank’s dock on Sunday, January 10 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. The Food Bank is located at 965 Albany Shaker Road in Latham, NY 12110. Hope to see you there!

Giving Thanks for Expansion Grants

walmart 2Thank you, Walmart and Feeding America, for Expansion Grants!

We are honored to have been chosen to receive two grants that will provide tremendous help as we expand donations from retail stores. In the coming months, we will be adding more stores and additional routes to our pick up schedule. A $50,000 Infrastructure Grant awarded by Feeding America will be applied toward the cost of one of the new refrigerated trucks we will need.

We were also one of 60 food banks in the Feeding America network – and the only in New York State — to be chosen to participate in the Walmart Foundation’s Performance Pilot Grant. In 2014, donations from our retail partners totaled over 6.45 million pounds, for which the Food Bank and our Retail Partner Agencies are very grateful, but there is still much more that is available for donation from current donors and new stores that will begin donating.

Walmart is dedicated to supporting the growth of retail store programs nationwide through this new form of grant award designed to help food banks create strategic plans to achieve recovery of all possible pounds identified based on Feeding America network averages comparing yield for stores of similar size. We received an initial grant payment of $20,000, and we will work with stores and RPAs to recover more food to earn an additional $20,000.

Summer Food Service Program

Children need good nutrition all year long. When school is out during the summer months, many children no longer have access to even one nutritious meal each day. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) helps fill the gap by providing free meals to children in need throughout the summer. The Regional Food Bank, other non-profits and schools across the country are working together to spread the word about the program. For your nearest meal site, click the button below or go to www.summermealsny.org
