What are culturally familiar foods?
Culturally familiar foods are often defined as: “Safe and nutritious foods that meet the diverse tastes and needs of customers based on their cultural identities.” Giving families an option to select culturally familiar foods holds space for cultural traditions and allows us, as coordinators, to consider food through a cultural framework.
How does incorporating culturally familiar foods benefit students?
Incorporating culturally familiar food options allows families to carry out traditions, holidays, and preparation methods that align with their cultural heritage. However, it’s important to note that just because an individual may identify with a specific culture, it does not mean they practice all holidays, preferences, and traditions associated with that culture.
