At the Regional Food Bank, our mission is clear: we lead a network of partners to alleviate hunger, prevent food waste, and nourish the communities we serve. Our vision is that all people have access to the nutritious food they need to thrive. But we know that food security isn’t just about having enough to eat—it’s about having access to food that nourishes both the body and the soul.
For many individuals and families, food is deeply tied to culture, tradition, and identity. That’s why sourcing culturally responsive foods is a crucial part of our work. When people receive foods they are familiar with and enjoy, they are more likely to eat well, which supports both physical and mental well-being. Recognizing the importance of culturally diverse foods, we have made significant strides in expanding our offerings to reflect the needs of the communities we serve.
A Look at Our Expanded Offerings
Over the past few years, we have been actively working to source foods from a variety of different cultures. Here’s a snapshot of some of the culturally significant foods we’ve introduced:
- Goya Instant Corn Masa Flour (1724-24)
Corn flour is a versatile ingredient used in many global cuisines, from East Asian to Latino cooking. It serves as the base for tortillas, tamales, and other staple foods in various cultures. - Peanut Butter (1065-24)
While peanut butter has always been a staple in our inventory, it is also a food that crosses many cultures. From West African peanut stews to Southeast Asian peanut sauces, this ingredient is used in a wide range of traditional dishes.
- Goya Adobo (1725-24)
A must-have seasoning in many kitchens, Adobo is a flavorful blend of spices that is a staple in Mexican, Spanish, Latin American, Philippine, and Puerto Rican cooking. By offering this seasoning, we help families prepare familiar meals that taste like home.
- Halal Chicken (20231) (Pictured above)
Halal refers to food that complies with Islamic dietary laws. Sourcing halal-certified chicken ensures that Muslim individuals and families can access protein that aligns with their faith and dietary practices.
- Goya Black Beans (3441)
Black beans are a nutritious and essential ingredient in many Caribbean, African, and Latino cuisines. They are used in a variety of traditional dishes, providing a valuable source of plant-based protein and fiber.
Why This Matters
Providing culturally responsive foods is about more than just variety—it’s about ensuring that every individual can maintain their cultural traditions and eat in a way that is meaningful to them. Food is a source of comfort, connection, and nourishment, and by expanding our offerings, we are making sure that all members of our community have access to the foods that sustain them both physically and emotionally.
We are committed to continuing this effort, working alongside our partners, donors, and the community to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, has access to foods that meet their needs. Together, we can create a more inclusive and food-secure future for all.
