The Regional Food Bank’s Micro-Purchasing Program is a powerful new approach to tackling food insecurity while strengthening our region’s agricultural economy. This innovative pilot connects local farms directly with food pantries and meal programs, ensuring neighbors in need receive fresh, nutritious, locally grown food, all while providing farmers with a reliable, mission-driven market.
Through this program, we partner with small farmers in underserved communities to purchase fresh produce and send it directly to area pantries looking to increase the quantity of fresh produce they’re able to distribute. Currently, we are working with a network of farmers and pantries in Essex, Rensselaer, and Ulster Counties, and are looking to expand to other farms in the future.
Regional Food Bank CEO Tom Nardacci said this investment comes at a critical time. “By sourcing food from nearby farms, we can reduce costs and keep food local, supporting both our communities and our regional economy. It’s a smart, sustainable way to fight hunger.”
This program is a win-win for local farmers and economies, our partner pantries and most importantly, our food insecure neighbors.
