This week, as we continue to celebrate National Nutrition Month, we highlight the importance of nutrition across all stages of life – starting with children. Ensuring access to nutritious food during childhood lays the foundation for lifelong health, supporting strong bodies and minds. Our Children’s Programs play a key role in this effort by providing the essential nutrients children need to grow, learn, and thrive.
Why Childhood Nutrition Matters
Proper nutrition is especially critical for children, as it directly impacts their growth, development, and ability to learn. A balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, proteins, and dairy helps support brain function, immune health, and overall well-being. Ensuring that children have access to nourishing food sets them up for long-term success in school and beyond.
Backpack Program: Nourishing Kids on Weekends
Our Backpack program serves approximately 4,700 children in need throughout our neighboring communities. The goal of the program is to provide nutritious, easy-to-prepare food for children to take home over the weekend, bridging the gap when they do not have access to school meals. By supplying items such as oatmeal, tuna, low-sodium soups, canned vegetables, and fresh produce, we help ensure children receive the essential nutrients they need to grow and thrive. This program alleviates stress for families who may struggle to provide enough food, offering peace of mind that their children have reliable meals during the weekend.
School Pantry: Food Access Within Schools
Another crucial initiative within our Children’s Programs is the School Pantry Program, which provides a sustainable, in-school resource for children and their families. These pantries are stocked with nutritious foods, including fresh produce, dairy, protein, and shelf-stable staples, allowing familiars to access the groceries they need in a familiar and convenient setting. School pantries empower families to select the foods that best meet their needs, fostering dignity and accessibility.
We thank our Children’s Program division for their dedication to fighting childhood hunger and ensuring that children in need receive the nutrition they deserve. For mor information on how you can support our Children’s Programs, click this link or email our team today!
